Madonna Nera: The Essence of Montalcino

A scenic vineyard landscape with rows of grapevines, green and orange harvest crates scattered among the vines, and cypress trees in the background leading to a rustic building.

Tucked into the rolling hills of southern Tuscany, Madonna Nera stands as a quiet expression of Montalcino’s winemaking heritage. The name “La Madonna” refers to this ancient terrain, an area steeped in beauty and history, where nature and artistry coexist in perfect harmony.

Though a relatively young estate, Madonna Nera honors the traditions of the region while embracing innovation in both vineyard and cellar. The property extends over six hectares of vineyards, two of which lie near the historic Abbey of Sant’Antimo, an area long celebrated for its exceptional terroir. Each row of vines is fronted by rose bushes, a nod to one of Tuscany’s most picturesque viticultural customs, and framed by olive trees, lavender, and Mediterranean vegetation.

At the heart of Madonna Nera’s philosophy is respect for Montalcino’s land: rocky soils rich in clay and sand, a perfect foundation for Sangiovese to express depth, freshness, and balance.

Wines of Madonna Nera

MADONNA NERA Montalcino, Tuscany, Brunello, Rosso, Toscana IGT

Madonna Nera’s range reflects both the timeless elegance and diversity of Montalcino. Each wine is crafted with precision, fermented in stainless steel at controlled temperatures and aged in French oak tonneaux to preserve purity and structure.

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG The flagship of the estate, made from 100% Sangiovese grown on rocky, clay-laced soils. Aged 24–30 months in French oak, the Brunello is structured yet graceful, showcasing the hallmark depth and longevity that define Montalcino’s finest wines.

Rosso di Montalcino DOC Also 100% Sangiovese, the Rosso is aged for 12 months in oak before release. It’s a vibrant, approachable expression of the same vineyards, offering freshness, red fruit, and refined tannins, an elegant introduction to the house style.

Toscana IGT (Supertuscan) A modern red blend of Sangiovese, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine embodies the estate’s willingness to explore beyond tradition while maintaining a sense of place. Structured, ripe, and polished, it reflects the evolving spirit of Montalcino today.

The Significance of IGT in Tuscany

The Indicazione Geografica Tipica (IGT) designation was introduced in 1992 to allow Italian winemakers greater creative freedom outside the strict rules of DOC and DOCG classifications. The category gave rise to the “Supertuscan” movement, wines that blended native and international grape varieties, showcasing Tuscany’s potential for innovation and quality beyond conventional boundaries.

Madonna Nera’s Toscana IGT is part of this legacy: a wine that bridges heritage and experimentation, uniting tradition with forward-thinking craftsmanship.
